Nothing on your Google Business Profile goes live until it’s verified — no map pin, no reviews, no posts, no way to respond to a customer. Google offers five verification methods, but doesn’t show all of them to every business; which ones you see depends on your category, location, and account history. Here’s how each one actually works.
1. Postcard verification
The default method for new listings with no prior history. Google mails a postcard to the business address with a 5-digit code, usually arriving in 5–7 days (sometimes longer outside major metros). You enter the code in your Business Profile dashboard under “Verify now.”
Best for: first-time listings, businesses with no existing Google account activity tied to the address.
Watch for: the address on the postcard must exactly match what’s on the listing — a suite number left off, or a slightly different spelling, can mean the postcard never confirms. Make sure someone at that address is checking mail during the window.
2. Phone verification
Available for many local businesses with an active phone number already listed. Google calls or texts a code to the business phone number instantly. It’s the fastest method when it’s offered.
Best for: any business with a working, monitored primary phone number — this is the one to choose whenever Google offers it.
Watch for: the phone number must be able to receive calls or SMS in real time during setup — a number that only routes to voicemail after hours can miss the window if you’re verifying outside business hours.
3. Email verification
Offered to some businesses with a business email address already on file that matches the domain of the business’s website. Google sends a verification link or code to that email instantly.
Best for: businesses with a professional email address (not a generic Gmail/Yahoo account) that matches their website domain.
Watch for: this option often doesn’t appear at all unless Google can match your email domain to your website — if you don’t see it, that’s usually why.
4. Video verification
A newer method for service-area businesses and some storefronts: you record a short video, walked through in real time per Google’s on-screen instructions, showing signage, the interior, proof of the address, or evidence of active service work. Google’s system (and sometimes a human reviewer) checks it.
Best for: service-area businesses without a public-facing storefront, where a postcard to a hidden address isn’t practical.
Watch for: follow the exact steps Google shows on screen — a generic walkthrough video that doesn’t hit the specific proof points it asks for gets rejected and you have to redo it.
5. Instant verification
Available only when your business is already verified with Google Search Console for the same website, or in a few other pre-vetted scenarios. If eligible, verification completes immediately with no code, postcard, or video required.
Best for: businesses that already manage their website through Search Console under the same Google account used for the Business Profile.
How to check: if you manage your own website and have access to Search Console, verify the domain there first (it’s free) — it sometimes unlocks instant verification for a Business Profile on the same account.
Which one to pick, if you have a choice
When Google offers more than one method, phone or instant verification is fastest and most reliable — pick either over postcard every time. Postcard is the one to expect for a brand-new listing with no account history; budget the 5–7 days into your launch timeline rather than being surprised by it. Video verification is worth understanding specifically if you’re a service-area business without a storefront, since it’s the practical alternative to a postcard that can’t confirm anything at a hidden address.
Once you’re verified, optimize from there
Verification just unlocks the profile — it doesn’t optimize it. The Google Business Profile checklist covers the 27 fixes that actually move your ranking once you’re live, in the order that matters most.
